Back in 2017, we enjoyed a wonderful trip to Morocco. We based ourselves in Marrakech, explored the Draa Valley, crossed the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, and stayed in the Zagora desert. It was a journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences. In this blog post, we’ll share how to spend a week in Morocco and make the most of this incredible destination.
Francesca and I have been traveling together for over 10 years, and we can proudly say we’ve seen our fair share of the world! In 2017, we spent a week in Morocco and had an unforgettable adventure. From the vibrant souks of Marrakech to the vast dunes of the desert, every moment was special. Now, we want to bring that experience to you. Let’s dive right in!
One-Week Morocco Itinerary: Starting from Marrakech
The best one-week Morocco itinerary has to start in Marrakech. Known for its ancient walled city, and the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Marrakech is one of the most vibrant cities in Morocco. It offers a wide range of activities, from tasting renowned cuisine to exploring stunning architecture and lush gardens. To fully enjoy a week in Morocco, allocate 2-3 days to discovering Marrakech.
During our stay in Marrakech, we chose Hotel & Spa Riad Al Jazira. A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house with a central courtyard, and many in Marrakech have been converted into guesthouses, offering a unique and authentic experience. Riad Al Jazira is nestled in a tranquil area within walking distance of the Medina. We loved their delicious food, especially the breakfast served by the pool. Their exceptional service makes them one of the top-rated riads in Marrakech on Booking.com.

The Best Things to Do in Marrakech
We spent three days in Marrakech and honestly felt we could have stayed even longer. Coincidentally, our college friends were also there, so it was great to spend time with them too! Now, let’s look at the best things to do in Marrakech.
1) Medina
One of the most popular attractions in Marrakech is Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, located in the heart of the Medina. This vibrant and colorful square is filled with street performers, food stalls, and vendors selling traditional Moroccan goods. The energy intensifies at night, making it the perfect spot to try authentic Moroccan cuisine. As you explore the Medina, you can easily spend hours navigating its maze-like alleys, browsing the “souks” (markets) for spices, textiles, pottery, and other handmade treasures.

2) Bahia Palace
Another must-visit attraction in Marrakech is the 19th-century Bahia Palace. Known for its beautiful gardens, intricate tilework, and stunning architecture that blends Moroccan and Islamic styles, the palace is a true gem. One of its most impressive features is the Grand Court, a large courtyard surrounded by a two-story gallery with ornate columns and arches. The courtyard, paved with marble, has a striking fountain at its center. To fully appreciate this breathtaking palace, taking a guided tour is highly recommended.

3) Hammam
One of the best experiences in Marrakech is visiting a Hammam, a traditional Moroccan bathhouse where locals relax and socialize. This cultural gem offers an opportunity to unwind while immersing yourself in Moroccan customs. Many Hammams provide spa treatments, including massages and facials, making it an ideal way to pamper yourself. During our trip, we indulged in a Hammam with a pamper package.
4) Majorelle Garden
Majorelle Garden is a must-see during your week in Morocco. With its lush greenery, colorful flowers, and beautiful architecture, the garden features over 300 plant species from around the world, including cacti, bamboo, palm trees, and water lilies.
After spending a half day in the noisy Medina, we loved the peace of Majorelle Garden. Strolling through its calm paths provided a relaxing break and a chance to enjoy nature. This lovely garden offered a perfect contrast to the vibrant energy of Marrakech, making it a memorable part of our trip.

5) Sunset Aperitifs
One of the best parts of Marrakech was relaxing on the terraces. Many bars and restaurants offer rooftop seating, perfect for enjoying panoramic views with a drink in hand.

6) Nightlife and Cuisine
Morocco is famous for its rich and flavorful cuisine. One must-try dish is Tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat, vegetables, and spices, traditionally made in a clay pot to enhance its aroma. Another staple is Couscous, made from semolina and served with a hearty vegetable and meat stew. For the ultimate food experience, consider booking the Marrakech Food Tour.
Marrakech’s nightlife is lively and diverse, offering something for everyone during a week in Morocco. Whether enjoying a casual meal or an upscale dinner, Tagine and Couscous are always great choices. We tried both—a tasty homemade meal at an outdoor eatery surrounded by donkeys and cats, and later, a dressed-up night at Palais Jad Mahal, a renowned club with great food, drinks, and belly dance shows.

How to Spend a Great Week in Morocco: Beyond Marrakech
Now that we’ve explored Marrakech, it’s time to move on. Morocco is full of historic cities and breathtaking landscapes. While a week in Morocco isn’t enough to see it all, a bus tour is a great way to explore more.
These tours take you through ancient medinas, coastal towns, and scenic deserts, offering a deeper glimpse into the country’s beauty and culture.
Aït Benhaddou
Early in the morning, we left Marrakech and headed south toward Aït Benhaddou. Moroccan roads are mostly unpaved, making driving challenging. Instead of renting a car, we recommend joining a bus tour for a smoother experience.
Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, is a well-preserved Ksar (fortified village) about 30 kilometers from Ouarzazate. Once a key stop for traders on the old caravan route, it has also been a filming location for movies like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia.
Upon arrival, local children greeted us and helped us cross the river for a small tip. Despite its popularity, the village felt peaceful, with few tourists around. We spent an hour exploring its striking adobe architecture, learning about its history, and soaking in the quiet charm of this fascinating place.

Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate, in southern Morocco, is famous for its stunning desert landscapes, historic Kasbahs, and thriving film industry. Though we only stopped briefly for food and didn’t explore much, the surrounding scenery left a lasting impression.
Driving through an oasis in the desert with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains in the background was breathtaking. As we made our way to the Draa Valley, we passed lush palm groves, charming villages, and ancient Kasbahs. This scenic journey led us to our main destination: Zagora.

Zagora Desert
Zagora, on the edge of the Sahara, is known for its stunning desert views, ancient sites, and rich Berber heritage. Upon arrival, we set off on a camel trek, perfectly timed for sunset.
At our base camp, we shared a meal with local Berbers, enjoyed music by the fire, and gazed at a sky filled with countless stars. The Milky Way was vividly visible, making the night truly magical. It was the perfect way to end our incredible week in Morocco.
